Loretta Young, Ricardo Cortez and Franchot Tone in the pre-code film Midnight Mary, 1933
I saw this on Sunday at the Edinburgh Film Guild, the first film of six in the “Bad Gal Melodramas” season. From the pre-film introduction 20 minute lecture, its characteristics were not what I expected. It was certainly not heightened enough to be considered melodrama, although the storyline did provide the framework for it to be. It just came off a little subdued considering the subject matter. Nevertheless it was fairly enjoyable and had a lot to like about it, particularly the cinematography.
The first film of the last season I attended, Queens of the Screwball Comedy, also did not capture what I felt the genre it belonged to represented, so hopefully it’s a repeat performance and the rest of the season is a wonderful way to spend 2 hours on a cold Sunday evening :)
